Milson Silver Goblets race 1 report

Race Officer Ian Kingsford Smith writes:

The Etchells Milson Silver Goblets series is traditionally sailed as a twilight series conducted by the Squadron over five races from Monday to Friday. Despite all that has been happening in the World over the past 12 months, it is going ahead this week and the first race was sailed on Monday 1 February.

The series has attracted 28 Etchells, and apart from the familiar Sydney faces, we welcomed former World Champion John Bertrand from Melbourne, the Etchells National President Mark Roberts from Adelaide and well-known yachtsman Mark Bradford from Brisbane. It was also good to see a number of youth crews representing both the CYCA and the Squadron being part of the fleet.

The 28 boat fleet got away to a clean start in race 1 in a lovely, relatively steady 15 knot nor’ easterly sea breeze with negligible tidal influence. The starting line was laid off Point Piper and a course of 025 degrees was signalled, with the windward marks laid just to the south of the western wedding cake.

John Bertrand established an early lead and went on to win the first race fairly comfortably by 32 seconds from Peter Merrington and another former Etchells World Champion, Colin Beashel. The second race of the series is scheduled for Tuesday evening.
